DISCOVERY KIDS CHILDCARE MOVES INTO THE OLD “KITCHEN CASTLE” BUILDING WITH FINANCING HELP FROM CREDC

The Harrisburg Regional Chamber & the Capital Region Economic Development Corporation (Chamber & CREDC) announced today that it partnered with Members 1st Federal Credit Union to provide financing to Discovery Kids Childcare.  The financing package enabled the company to buy and renovate the old “Kitchen Castle” building at 1963 Oberlin Road, Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County, PA.  This purchase provides the company with more child care space to support the growth of the business which was operating with an extensive waiting list of children in need of services.

Erin Popernack and Amy Schreffler opened their first Discovery Kids Childcare center a quarter of a mile from this new location in July 2007 with only a handful of children to serve.  But in only 6 months, the center and 50 children enrolled.  In 2010 the company purchased a 2nd location in Londonderry Township and soon thereafter opened a 3rd location in Middletown.  Prior to the relocation of their Oberlin Road location the company had an extensive waiting list.  Discovery Kids is a DPW licensed and Keystone STARS accredited childcare facility.   They service families with children between 6 weeks old and 6th grade.  Erin and Amy believe that childcare is more than providing a location to keep children safe.  They believe that the power of young minds to learn is breathtaking.  Therefore they focus heavily on educating the children in their centers.  By developing a strong and established curriculum for classes as young as 2 years old, Amy and Erin have built their reputation for providing children a firm foundation for development and growth.  In addition to full time childcare, Discovery Kids also provides before and after school care and summertime care.

CREDC provided a loan for $542,000 using the SBA 504 loan program.  This loan program provides the company with a fixed rate for 20 years and the ability to reduce the amount of cash traditionally needed for real estate projects.  The project provided a total economic impact to our region of over $1.1 million.  The company expects to retain current jobs and create additional jobs as the company grows.
