National Unemployment Rate Drops Below 6%

For the first time since July 2008 the national unemployment rate has dropped below 6% according to Marketwatch.com.  Many sectors of the economy added jobs totaling 248,000 in the month of September.

Though on the surface this is good news as less people are on the unemployment rolls, it has also been reported by Marketwatch.com that the labor force participation rate is now at the lowest levels in 36 years.  The current national work force participation rate is down a tenth of a percent to 62.7%.  With the number of available jobs growing there are concerns as to why not as many people are looking for work and this trend is expected to continue as the baby boomers begin to retire.

At the local level, we are continuing to see a steady increase in the number of jobs available.  In the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metropolitan Area as of August the unemployment rate was 4.8%.  According to information available from the Center for Workforce Information and Analysis with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor, there were 34,776 available job openings in the metro area and 13,800 people unemployed.  For our region this continues the trend of having more available positions than available workers, which started in April 2013.  Visit the CREDC website to view the list of the top 1o most in demand occupations in our region.
