U.S. Small Business Lending Jumps in May

The Thomson Reuters / PayNet Small Business Lending Index rose from 98.6 in April to 108.4 in May. The Index measures the overall volume of financing to small U.S. companies and is usually a sign of stronger economic growth ahead. This gain reversed most of the declines of the prior four months. According to Bill Phelan founder of PayNet “Low interest rates and stronger corporate balance sheets are probably fueling the increase in borrowing.”  This increase in small business lending contrasts other data signaling economic trouble.
