Unemployment Rate Climbs in the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metro Area

The unemployment rate in the Harrisburg-Carlisle MSA in June climbed to 7.2% up .4% from the May rate of 6.8%.  Though on the surface the rate indicates more unemployed people in the market, an analysis of the underlying numbers tells a different story.  There were 800 more people employed in the metro area in June compared to May.  This continued the trend of more people becoming employed which has been generally increasing since the spring of 2011.  The primary reason that the unemployment rate increased is that while 800 more people are employed in the market, 2,200 additional workers joined the workforce during the same period.  That caused the overall unemployment rate to increase.
