Hershey Center for Applied Research wins Premier Project Award

HERSHEY, Pa.-   The Dauphin County Planning Commission has presented Hershey Center for Applied Research with the Premier Project Award for Sustainable Growth.  The honor acknowledges professional leadership in creating projects that promote smart, environmentally friendly expansion for a variety of uses.
Hershey Center for Applied Research (HCAR), in partnership with the Hershey Trust Company, is a growing hot spot for research and development projects from all over the world.  HCAR’s Knowledge Community brings together innovative, cutting edge businesses in an environment where they collaborate and grow. Current tenants include everything from cancer research projects to new product development companies.
“At HCAR, we are bringing brilliant people together to live, work and play right here in Dauphin County,” says Jack Atchason, Executive Director of HCAR. “Through this project we are enhancing economic development, not only by attracting new businesses to the area, but by welcoming their employees into our community as well.”
The Hershey Center for Applied Research is located adjacent to Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Derry Township.  During development, special care was taken to preserve the100 year old floodplain’s habitat for native plants, as well as restore a historic farmhouse on the property, now renovated into a restaurant for employees.  As part of the development a bike trail was relocated on to the property as well as a child care center for working parents.
“It is our vision to create a fully functioning community where businesses can develop and grow, and where their employees can network and collaborate.” says Atchason. “We believe that is ‘sustainable growth’ in the truest sense of the term.”
