EXPERIENCE HARRISBURG .. The cure for the common job fair

In an effort to familiarize the region with some of the projects that CREDC has originated over the past fourteen years, we came up with the CREDC Top 20. CREDC will be highlighting some of the projects over the next year. For the July newsletter we have chosen Experience Harrisburg that was part of our talent retention effort from 2003 – 2014.

Experience Harrisburg (The Cure for the Common Job Fair) began as a companion project with Project OSCAR, the talent attraction magazine that we featured in June.  CREDC has been in the talent retention and attraction space since 2002 and Experience Harrisburg became a successful tactic to bring juniors and seniors from regional (and beyond!) colleges and universities to downtown Harrisburg.  Various downtown venues were featured during the evening such as Metro Bank, Stocks, Molly Brannigans, Scotts, Temple University in Strawberry Square, the Whitaker Center and Harrisburg University.

Our major partner in the event was the Harrisburg Young Professionals who assisted us in guiding the students to the different downtown venues to meet with employers. Every year 35 – 40 employers from the region would meet with the “traveling” groups of students throughout the evening. The evening always culminated at either the Firehouse or Dragonfly where pizzas were abundant and prizes were plentiful.  Between 200 – 250 students participated in the yearly event as they pursued internships and full time jobs.  Cumulus and ABC-27 were our media partners and various corporations such as Capital Blue Cross were our sponsors.

The yearly event was always a success!  It encouraged students to meet with regional employers in a non-traditional way and it also provided an opportunity for them to get a flavor of downtown Harrisburg, the hub of the region.

Now that on campus job fairs have become the trend, CREDC has decided to disband Experience Harrisburg and attend various job fairs on campus to market The Live the Life You Want campaign, our latest effort in the talent retention and attraction space.
